CCTV System Design: Camera Placement, Storage and Network Planning

CCTV design starts with the purpose of each camera location: identifying people at entrances, monitoring outdoor areas or covering cash handling and loading points. Lens selection, image resolution and lighting conditions should match the required task and viewing distance.

Storage planning considers camera count, recording bitrate, recording schedules and the required retention period. Capacity allowances for redundancy and future expansion should be included where specified. The retention period and storage assumptions should be documented in the project scope.

Network planning includes PoE power budgets, switch and uplink capacity, and appropriate network segmentation. Camera cabling and equipment locations should be coordinated with other ELV systems to simplify installation and maintenance.
