Fire Fighting Systems: Pumps, Sprinklers and Suppression Basics

Water-based fire fighting starts with occupancy hazard and available water. Pump sets, tanks, sprinklers and hydrants are one hydraulic system. A pump without a defined flow and pressure is not a specification.

Sprinkler layout follows ceiling type, storage height and obstruction. Hose reels and landing valves serve first-aid fire fighting; they do not replace automatic sprinklers where the occupancy requires them. Test headers and drain arrangements belong in the pump room from the start.

Where water would damage the contents — IT rooms, kitchens, certain process areas — clean-agent, CO2, foam or hood systems are discussed as a separate but related package, always with detection that can release them.

ASIF coordinates fire-fighting design, supply and installation with fire alarm so flow switches and shutdowns are commissioned together. The quotation should state hazard class, pump duty and the suppression media — not a generic ‘fire system’.
