UPS vs Generator: Understanding Their Roles in Critical Power Systems
Minutes versus hours: why uninterruptible supply and standby generation are complementary, not alternatives.

A UPS and a generator solve different failures. The UPS covers the gap between mains loss and stable alternative power — typically minutes — and conditions the supply for IT and sensitive controls. The generator covers hours, provided fuel, starting and ventilation work.
Sizing the UPS from catalogue kVA without a load list produces either wasted autonomy or a drop on transfer. Fire alarm panels, access controllers and selected HVAC controls often belong on UPS even when the rest of the building waits for the generator.
Generator conversations include essential-load schedules, starting current, ATS position, exhaust and acoustic treatment of the room. Perkins and Cummins are among the engine platforms ASIF supplies; FARBER appears on the UPS and energy side of the same discussion.
The two systems must be sequenced. Incorrect bypass or ATS timing can drop the very loads the UPS was meant to protect. That sequence should be tested at handover, not left as a drawing note.
