What Is a Building Management System (BMS)?

A building management system (BMS) provides central monitoring and supervisory control for building services. It collects operating data, displays equipment status and allows approved commands and setpoint changes within the defined integration scope.

The starting point is a documented point list covering temperatures, equipment status, alarms, energy meters and permitted commands. Operator graphics should reflect these points, while alarm priorities and routing should support clear day-to-day operation. Interfaces with fire and security systems must preserve their required independent functions.

A BMS can be useful when equipment is distributed across several areas, central operating visibility is needed or energy reporting is part of the project. Its value depends on the quality of the point list, integration design and operator handover.
